LA Galaxy buys a Pig-in-a-Poke

Phaedrus apologizes for thrusting this inconsequential piece of celebrity tittle-tattle on his serious-mined readership, but it’s heartening for anyone with a healthy contempt for ‘celebrity culture’ to hear about, so please read on.

There has been a huge amount of publicity surrounding the arrival of one-time England soccer captain, David Beckham and his one-time Spice Girl spouse, Victoria. From the reception these two has-beens have gotten from the media and Hollywood stars, you might think they were the answer to all LAG’s prayers.

Unfortunately, they are both WELL passed their sell-by dates and have been forced to come to America by the fact that they’re justifiably regarded as burnt-out at home where neither of them are any longer wanted and the public are increasingly sick of the sight of them and their relentless self-promotion.

Mr. Beckham was indeed a fine soccer player in his day and certainly one of the best in the world, but that was all a LONG time ago, especially in view of the short career lives of soccer players. He has failed to shine now for many years. His career peak was probably back in 2000/2001 and a lot has happened in the intervening years.

LA Galaxy have paid a great deal of money for next-to-nothing. The fans have HUGE expectations of Beckham, which are certain to be dashed. He has lost his flair, his one-time skills, and is riddled with injury problems. No doubt when LAG’s fans see month after month after month go by with no improvement in the team’s performance, they will realize they’ve been sold a dummy – and a very expensive one!

It should therefore prove an enjoyable year ahead for those of us who despise the simpletons among us who are more concerned with phoney celebrity glitter and superficial things than with what’s REALLY going on in America today. The air-heads that turned out to scream their hysterical welcome to the Beckhams will get precisely what they deserve: a massive disappointment.
